Leonid Mihayilovich Roshal was born into a military family on the 27 of April, 1933. His father was a pilot and his family was living in Liviny, in the Orlovsk region. In 1957, he graduated from the MOLGMI specializing in pediatrics. After graduating from university he was appointed to work as the children's local doctor. For 20 years he was worked in Moniki near Vladimirskiy. In 1964 – he wrote his master's thesis, in 1970 - has received his doctorate degree.

Now Leonid Roshal now heads the Moscow Scientific Research Institute for Emergency Children’s Surgery and Traumatology. Professor Roshal’ is the author of seven books and hundred scientific articles.

Leonid Roshal is a member of “The World Health Organization”. He is chairman of “WADEM”. This is an international aid organization which aims to rescue children in trouble. Leonid Roshal was appointed a member of the commission of Human Rights by the President of the Russian Federation.

In 1996 Leonid Roshal was named “Doctor of the World" by journalists.

All doctors, involved in his “WADEM” brigade of international first aid are always ready to help children all over the world. Since 1988, this brigade have visited more than 20 places, where disastrous took place. Some of the projects include relief work at the aftermath the of railway accident near Ufa and an explosion at the Ust'-Kamenski factory. Dangerous trips were made to crisis and war zones in the following areas: Romania, Republics of the former Yugoslavia, Abkhazia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Israel and the Chechen Republic. They were helping and saving lives after earthquakes in Egypt, Japan, Georgia, Sakhalin, California, Afghanistan and Turkey.
During the terrible act of terrorism in Kaspiyisk on the 9th of May, 2002, Roshal's brigade immediately began to evacuate people. Fortunately, 27 children were rescued due to the heroic work of Roshal's brigade.

The Tragic days of the theater hostage crisis in Dubrovka were very difficult for Leonid Roshal. Nevertheless, he had an opportunity to get inside of the "Nord-Ost" hall, where hostages were held.
There he negotiated with terrorists, assisted patients, and even evacuated children.

On the 5th of November, 2002, Leonid Roshal was been awarded the "National Hero" title for courage and selflessness shown in execution of civic duty.

On the 19th of January, 2005 Leonid Roshal became the first person in Russia to be awarded "European of the Year" by the U.S. magazine "Reader's Digest".
